From Football to Farming

In 2012, the former NFL player, Jason Brown, made a decision that stunned both his fans and the sports industry. At the peak of his career, he felt a divine calling that changed the course of his life.

Turning his back on the millions he could have continued earning, he set his sights on a new dream—one that would impact not just his life, but the lives of countless others. Brown decided to leave professional football to dedicate himself to ending hunger in his community.

However, this leap of faith did not come without its challenges. After leaving the NFL, Brown faced unexpected financial setbacks. Due to third-party mismanagement and bad luck, he lost much of the money he had saved during his football career—the same money he had planned to use to start his new venture.

Despite this setback, he remained steadfast in his belief that he was on the right path. He needed a miracle, and in time, that miracle came. By 2014, Brown had purchased a large plot of land in Louisburg, North Carolina, and began working on what would soon become First Fruits Farm.

His goal was simple but powerful: to use his land to feed those who were struggling with hunger. With one in four children in North Carolina unsure where their next meal would come from, Brown saw an opportunity to make a real difference.

Since the farm’s establishment, Brown and his family have donated over 1.6 million servings of fresh produce to their community. Their farm’s mission is encapsulated by their motto: “Never stop giving. Never stop loving. Never stop growing.”

Brown, once known for his moves on the football field, had now found fulfillment in tending to crops and ensuring others didn’t go hungry. Reflecting on his transition, Brown said, “If you had told me ten years ago this is where I’d be, I would have laughed in your face.”

He admitted that his decision to leave football wasn’t easy. At the age of 27, he had a moment of self-reflection, questioning his purpose and the legacy he was building.

The turning point came when he reflected on his older brother, who died while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it inspired Brown to seek a life of greater service.

“When I turned 27 years old, the same age that he was when he was slain in service, that caused me to reflect deeply as to what more can I do,” Brown recalled.

He began to realize that his life of materialism and entertainment wasn’t enough. The desire to honor his brother’s memory drove him to make the leap into service—and ultimately, into farming.

Many people, including his agent, thought Brown had made the “biggest mistake of his life” by walking away from the NFL. Critics told him he was foolish for giving up millions of dollars, but Brown didn’t waver.

“Oh yes, I get that all the time. People tell me I’m crazy; they downright tell me that I’m stupid for walking away,” Brown shared. Despite the doubters, he felt a strong conviction that he was meant for more than just football.

The night before he made the official decision, Brown admitted he struggled. “How was I going to present this to the world?” he wondered. His biggest concern was how to explain it to his wife, who had become accustomed to a luxurious lifestyle, including their 12,000-square-foot mansion.

“That’s my wife, I promised her the world. I promised her all of those awesome things and now God is calling us towards a more humble lifestyle,” he reflected. Naturally, there was a period of adjustment for the former center’s wife, as giving up a comfortable lifestyle isn’t something most people do easily.

In fact, she added that it was what many aim for—security and being provided for. Though initially hesitant, when her husband shared his vision, she turned to her faith for guidance and ultimately supported him. “It took a change of mindset and heart,” Brown’s wife revealed.

When asked how farming became the answer, Brown said he had a moment of clarity when he prayed and asked God, “With all the gifts, talents, and blessings I’ve been given, what can I do to be a blessing to my neighbors?” The response he felt was clear: “Feed my people well.”

At first, Brown knew nothing about farming, but he embraced the challenge, trusting in his faith to guide him. For Brown, the journey has been one of deep faith and trust.

“This is the most epic trust fall ever,” he said, describing how he put his full faith in God. “You have to trust that He’s not going to let you down—and guess what, He’s not,” Brown continued.

Social media users praised Brown and his incredible story, with one person sharing“WOW!!! The love it takes for someone to do all of that work, and then give it away to help feed people. Sending lots of love and prayers to them as they continue to LOVE people. Beautiful!”

Another person typed“Wow! God bless you and your family.” A third person added“What a wonderful story, giving back and help is showing love [sic].” Someone else wrote“I can’t believe this story, WOW.”

Jason Brown’s journey from NFL stardom to farming illustrates a powerful story of purpose and faith. By turning away from wealth and fame, he found fulfillment in serving his community and feeding those in need.
